Isobel Twelvetrees lives in Britain at the end of the twenty-second century. It is a world transformed by climate change. The sea has risen 60 meters. The only major British city to survive the floods is Birmingham and that was abandoned centuries before, during the civil unrest, wars, and breakdown of government that followed. Isobel was born lucky. She was one of the privileged few born inside a city, a place surrounded by high walls to keep the rest of the people out. Cities are sheltered from the terrible heat that has turned a once famously rainy green country into a desert.
I’ve put together some maps that try and visualize what I was thinking when I wrote The Kind. There’s a little bit of commentary too.
You are signing up for my mailing list. This is the main way I keep in touch with people who like my books. It is the best way to get in touch with me personally because I always respond to (civil) emails from readers. I have made some good friends this way who live all over the world and I think it’s kind of nice. You may find this interesting. If you do not, it’s very easy to unsubscribe! Just sign-up, download the book, and unsubscribe. Your email address will be deleted.
